No one said it out loud, but everyone knew that just a year ago this woman had been merely the wife of the company owner, and that she had now become the head of a vast organization.

Her husband had died suddenly. A tragic accident had taken his life in a single evening, and no one had even had time to believe it had actually happened. He hadn’t left a will, as he was still young and had never given death a second thought.

According to the law, all his assets, bank accounts, and the company itself passed to his legal wife. They had no children, so she became the sole heir and the only person with the right to run the company.

This news was a devastating blow to her mother. The mother-in-law was convinced that her son would always have taken care of her and would never have left her without a share. But the law was on the daughter-in-law’s side.

At first, the woman tried to speak calmly, but then the endless arguments, accusations, and recriminations began. The mother-in-law repeated more and more often that the daughter-in-law had taken everything that belonged to her family.

The final straw was the office party. The employees decided to celebrate the new director’s appointment and invited almost everyone connected to the company. One of the employees also decided to invite the mother-in-law, thinking it was the right thing to do.

The woman arrived dressed in a black suit and spoke very little with the guests. She stood by the window, observing the people and occasionally casting cold glances at her daughter-in-law.

When the music softened and some of the guests went out onto the roof of the skyscraper, the daughter-in-law approached the glass balustrade to watch the evening city.

For a few seconds they remained silent, then the woman said softly:

“All of this must have belonged to our family.”

The mother-in-law was certain that if her daughter-in-law disappeared, the entire inheritance would eventually pass to her, since she was the only remaining relative of the deceased owner of the business.

But she had no idea what was about to happen a few minutes later.

But a few seconds later, screams rang out from the roof. The building’s security team was already running toward the edge. The daughter-in-law hadn’t immediately fallen.

During her fall, she instinctively grabbed onto the metal structure of a service platform located a few meters below the roof. Her hands slipped on the cold metal, the wind tore at her dress, and her legs dangled precariously over the dizzying height.

Several employees saw her and began shouting for help.

Security guards and two men quickly descended the service stairs and, in less than a minute, managed to reach her and pull her onto the platform.

The young woman was trembling, her hands were bleeding from the cuts, but she was alive. A few minutes later, police officers and paramedics were already on the roof.

When the stepdaughter was taken to the hospital, she opened her eyes for a moment and said softly to the police officer:

“Please… don’t let her go.”

At that moment, the stepmother understood for the first time that her plan had collapsed and that a completely different life now awaited her.
