The telephone on the bedside table hadn’t rung for days.

Things had been so different before. Years ago, his house was always full of people. His children came to celebrate his birthday, his grandchildren ran around, the kitchen smelled of delicious food, and candles flickered on the cake. Back then, the old man laughed the loudest and said he wasn’t afraid of getting old because he had a large family by his side.

But the years changed everything, almost imperceptibly. The children grew up, each with their own life, their own worries, and living in different cities. The large house gradually emptied. First, the lively parties disappeared, then the phone calls became less frequent, and finally, even the long evenings in his old armchair turned into a familiar silence.

The monitor by the bed emitted a soft beep. The old man lay on the pillows, breathing slowly and sometimes closing his eyes, exhausted. It seemed that this birthday, too, would pass like the others: quietly and almost unnoticed.

At his feet lay a golden retriever named Richard. The dog had lived with the old man for several years. When he was hospitalized, the doctors initially refused to let him stay with him, but a young doctor eventually asserted that, sometimes, such bonds were more beneficial than medication.

That day, he silently climbed onto the blanket, lay down gently, and rested his head on his master’s chest. The dog remained perfectly still, only occasionally letting out a deep sigh, as if he sensed that something important was happening in the room.

The hours passed slowly. Outside, night gradually fell.

The old man finally opened his eyes and felt the soft, warm fur beneath his hand. His fingers trembled, but he gently stroked the dog’s head.

“There you are at last, old man…” he murmured softly.
